The biggest hair trends on social media

The Butterfly Cut @david.davidhairstudio

Several animal-themed haircuts feature in the Top Five of the Beauty Pie 2023 Trends Report, namely the Butterfly, Octopus, Jellyfish and Wolf.

To create the 2023 Trends Report, online cosmetics platform Beauty Pie analysed millions of data points for hundreds of trends on TikTok, Instagram, Pinterest and Google.

According to the report, the Butterfly Haircut takes top spot in the Beauty Pie Top 10 Trends list, having experienced a popularity increase of 12,432%. This cut has lots of wispy, descending layers pulled away from the face to give the effect of a butterfly’s fluttering wings.

Second spot on the trends list is occupied by the Octopus Haircut, which has seen interest grow by over 6,000%. Described as being similar to a mullet, the Octopus style has more body and volume at the crown of the head (like the head of the octopus) and then longer, thinner, shag-like layers from the mid-shaft to ends (the tentacles).

The Jellyfish Cut @salomedewet

In third spot is the Jellyfish Haircut (up by 1,185%), which features disconnected short bob-like layers with longer layers underneath.

The remaining Top 10 trends on the Beauty Pie report are (in ascending order): Spiky Bun - 257%; Wolf Cut - 135%; Twist Knot Bun - 89%; Scalp Serum - 47%; Frame Haircut - 24%; Loop Braids - 19%; and Barbie Hair - 3%.

It’s worth noting that only one of the trends (i.e. Scalp Serum) focused on hair health. The interest in Barbie Hair might have been sparked by the advent of the up-coming live-action ‘Barbie’ movie starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling.

The Wolf Cut @ashleyperrin.hair

One of the biggest trending styles of 2022, the Wolf Cut made the number five spot in this year’s Beauty Pie list. A mix of the shag haircut and a mullet, this style is created on longer hair and has shorter choppy layers around the side and back. (Source: https://www.beautypie.com/blog/posts/trends-report-2023)
