After an absence of three years due to the pandemic, the Salon International Expo made a welcome return to Gallagher Convention Centre on 28 & 29 August.
The event was run in conjunction with the Professional Beauty Johannesburg Show, and while smaller than previous events due to the depressed economy, attracted thousands of visitors and some leading hair brands as exhibitors.
As always, Salon International’s Live Hair Stage proved to be a big drawcard, with several demos by leading figures in the industry. The stage saw the international launch of a new South African hair brand, Strong and Beautiful, distributed by Blue Sky. As part of the launch, celebrity hairstylist Terence Jansen van Vuuren demonstrated how to cut a wig, a skill that he believes is lacking in this country.
Well-known hair personality, Bongani, was also part of the Strong and Beautiful launch, which saw models with different hairstyles populate the stage and have their hair treated with the new brand’s products.
King Nkosi caused quite a stir with his demo, themed ‘Fire & Ice’, which represented the different cultures of Africa. The main attraction of this presentation was a model sporting a striking African-inspired hairpiece embellished with beads.
Twincare International’s Stav Dimitriadis presented two different sessions. The first was a demo by barber, MK, who used the Babyliss Pro Clipper. In the second Twincare session, Joico educator, Isabel, demoed the Babyliss Miracurl.
In another session, leading barbers from the Wahl team showed how the brand’s clippers can be used for buzz cuts and brush cuts. Wahl also did a presentation on their training courses.
Stylist Raeesa Dawood, a previous winner of Salon International’s Up & Coming Hairstylist Award and Twincare International’s Hair Stylist of the Year 2020, did a step by step tutorial of how to create a trendy celebrity hairstyle, in this instance, a high pony.
The 2023 edition of the Salon International Expo will take place at Gallagher Convention Centre on 3 & 4 September. (Report by Natasha Chisese and Joanna Sterkowicz)
