With the whole world wondering what this year holds in terms of the pandemic and vaccine efficacy, it’s at least possible to trend spot and L’Oréal has released its predictions for this year’s hippest hairdos.

First up is silver purple hair, as often seen on reality TV star, Kelly Osbourne. L’Oréal describes this hybrid hair colour as ‘bold and chic, combing notes of purple with shimmery silver tints’.

Pixie cuts were seen already in the latter part of 2020 – think singer Halsey and comedian Tiffany Haddish. More ladies are expected to shear off their long locks in favour of this no-maintenance style.

Brunettes are likely to opt for rose brown shades, while hair clips and barrettes, which showed up all over the red carpet last year, are predicted to trend strongly, worn in all manner of ways around the head.

Bangs (i.e. fringes) will pervade, whether side-swept or face-framing curtain bangs.

The L’Oréal trend report references ‘smoked marshmallow hair’, which has brunette roots that gradually become platinum blonde.

Bobs always seem to be in vogue and this year will see the blunt bob, bobs with textured strands, and the side-parted asymmetrical bob. A distant cousin of the bob – the lob – will have choppy layers.

Two-tone hair was evident quite a bit last year, most notably on singer Dua Lipa, and is likely to remain popular in 2021.

Lace front wigs, Fulani braids and Afros are expected to prevail this year.
