Should you offer hair only, or other services as well?

The decision of whether a salon should focus on hair services exclusively, or try to be all things to all people, is an important business consideration for any owner.

An article in the June 2022 issue of the Salon International digital magazine poses this question to two leading salon owners. One owner says his well-known colour bar also offers holistic beauty services, has an in-house barista, and even a resident dog for clients to interact with. All of these factors have contributed to creating a ‘community hub’ for his business.

The other owner featured in the article has stuck strictly to offering hair services only, as this is his niche. He believes that offering additional services would not feel right, and neither is his salon space set up for it. Furthermore, offering additional services might require changes to the way the salon is insured.
