Develop a positive mindset to overcome adversity

In these times of radical uncertainty, it’s essential that spa and salon owners / managers try and develop a proactive mindset.
Says Tanya Chernova, author, keynote speaker and performance coach (Canada): “My first bit of advice would be to ground yourself with a radical acceptance of the circumstances, knowing that we are all going through this together. Take one step at a time.
“Then, connect with your inspiring community of resourceful believers for ideas and nourish yourself with positive content. Focus on what you CAN do. Recommit to why you do what you do and lead, hour by hour, with positive strategies to support yourself, business, clients and team.
Chernova advocates practicing the 3Ms, namely Meditate, Move and Mindfulness. She continues: “Use the Cognitive Circle of Influence by writing out the negative chatter that enters the mind and consider the opposite as true to get a new perspective. Focus on fact vs opinion and look for what’s working with a mindset of gratitude. Mine your diamonds. Share your passion for wellness as a top priority for your clients and their families.”
Carol Philips, author, keynote speaker and performance coach (USA), notes that fear can mask a lot of ‘sins’. “We think and feel fear, but you have to peel back the onion skin – the fear of failure, fear of success, fear of looking stupid and the imposter syndrome. Many people don’t take the time to slow down and tune into themselves. Now, they have the time to ask key questions.
“As a sales trainer, I know there is going to be even more of an inherent subconscious fear of selling. Prior to lockdown, therapists might not have been able to sell well, due to lack of effective sales training, for instance. Now, when they come back from being on unemployment, or from super-fragile living conditions, it will take a while for them to feel that it’s ok to recommend an expensive service or retail product to clients.”
Philips advises having something to look forward to and plan for. “So, for me, I am putting all my energy, drive and excitement on 30 days from now, and even 60 or 90 days from now. At the moment, most people are feeling shell shocked and that the ground is shifting beneath their feet. But when we have something to look forward to and plan for, it focuses our energy on the future not the immediate crisis.
“In terms of your suppliers – now is the perfect time to reach out and map out a sales strategy. What do you both need to do in order to succeed? Whether it be a training plan, new product launch plan, or social content, be ready to pull the trigger for orders so you are first in the queue when vendors start shipping again, otherwise it will be like a restaurant – first in, first out with food. You don’t want to be waiting longer for shipments to arrive.
“We are all in this together – worldwide – but what we, as leaders, must do, is to instill hope and a solid plan for re-opening.”
In conclusion, Chernova says: “Make the decision to be a victor and not a victim of your circumstance. In order to be hopeful – you must become helpful. Create a vision of the future that becomes your lighthouse.”
